Winter Warmers Winter Cocktails

Winter Warmers – Try a few of our favourite winter cocktails.

Winter is the perfect time of year to rug up on the couch with a hot drink. However, this doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying your favourite liqueurs, spirits and wine. Try your hand at some of our favourite ‘Winter Warmer’ cocktails with the below recipes.

ADULTS ONLY HOT CHOCOLATE
Grab your favourite coffee liqueur from your local IGA Liquor and rug up on the couch with this delicious adults only hot chocolate. This doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the marshmallows though!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of your favourite coffee liqueur
  • Mini marshmallows, optional for serving
  • Salted caramel, optional for serving
  • Chocolate syrup, optional for serving

Instructions
In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon and nutmeg over medium heat until heated through, about 2-3 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in coffee liqueur.

Serve immediately, garnished with mini marshmallows, salted caramel and chocolate syrup, if desired.

Serves 1.

 

SLOW COOKER MULLED WINE

Warm up this winter with a mulled wine recipe made in the slow cooker. Perfect for the colder weather! A flexible recipe, adjust quantities and ingredients to suit your taste preferences.

 Ingredients

  • One 750ml bottle of your favourite red wine from your local IGA Liquor (Cabernet Sauvignon works well)
  • 1L your favourite juice (cranberry/pomegranate works well)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • zest of one orange
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • orange slices for serving (optional)

Instructions

Put all the ingredients (minus the orange slices) in the slow cooker.

Cook on low for 3-4 hours until hot but not boiling. Serve with orange slices as garnish.

Serves 6-8.

HOT BUTTERED RUM
This hot buttered rum is perfectly enhanced by a spiced butter made with brown sugar, rum's core material.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch salt
  • 3/4 cup spiced rum
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 4 sticks cinnamon, for garnish

Instructions

Beat butter, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with a mixer on medium speed until combined, about 1 minute.

Combine two tablespoons of spiced butter with dark rum in each of 4 heatproof glasses.

Pour 3/4 cup boiling water over each, and stir.

Top each with a squeeze of fresh orange juice.

 Serves 4.

 

SCOTCH HOT TODDY RECIPE

An old drink some believe was invented in Scotland in the 1700’s, a classic drink to warm you up during the rainy winter months.

 Ingredients

  • ¼ cup of Scotch
  • 3 teaspoons honey syrup (see note)
  • Lemon wedge
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • Cinnamon stick, star anise, allspice berries, cloves, to garnish
  • 1-inch round of orange peel, to garnish

Instructions

Note: Honey syrup is honey mixed with equal parts hot water.

Combine Scotch, honey syrup, and the juice of one lemon wedge in a glass. Add hot water. Garnish with one cinnamon stick, star anise, allspice berries, and one coin of orange peel studded with cloves.

Serves 1.
