Meatballs and Red Wine—the Perfect Italian Couple

Meatballs and Red Wine—the Perfect Italian Couple

Today is World Food Day, a day to celebrate all things culinary, but everyone knows that drinks are the silent heroes of meal times. After all, what’s a delicious dish without the right tipple to wash it down?

In our humble opinion, there are few better pairings than fine red wine and a meaty Italian pasta with a tomato based sauce. That’s why we’ve knocked together this simple pasta meatball recipe, and selected the perfect wine to go with it—Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Shiraz, available from your local IGA Liquor

So, pour yourself a generous glass of red wine (compulsory when cooking), put on that quirky apron Gran gave you three Christmases ago, and let’s get to it.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • A handful of breadcrumbs

  • 60ml full-fat milk

  • 500g of lean ground beef
  • A splash of Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Shiraz

  • 1 onion (chopped)

  • 2 garlic cloves (crushed)

  • 1 tbsp parsley (chopped)

  • 1 tbsp oregano (finely chopped)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp sea salt

  • A few grinds of pepper

  • 2 tbsp olive oil (extra virgin)

  • 950ml marinara sauce

  • Fresh spaghetti

NOW THE MAGIC HAPPENS

  1. Grab a smallish bowl and soak the breadcrumbs in the milk. Now, grab a large bowl and mix the ground beef with the soaked breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, parsley, oregano, egg, salt and pepper, and a splash of Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Shiraz. Bravo.

  2. Shape the meat mix into 6-8 balls.

  3. Heat the olive oil in a deep non-stick frying pan. Add the meatballs and shallow fry over a moderately high heat, turning occasionally until browned all over (about seven minutes). Add the marinara sauce to the pan then cover and simmer over a low heat for about 30 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through.

  4. Serve over cooked spaghetti. Hey presto.

Too easy.

While you’re at IGA Liquor (find your nearest store), you’ll want to pick up a few bottles of Asti Spumante Riccadonna for the apéritif—a versatile sparkling wine which is super easy to drink.

Now, it’s time to sit down with your mates and enjoy some good food, great wine, and fantastic conversation (waving your hands around expressively at all times).

Happy World Food Day,
The IGA Liquor Team
